Price overview: cost of charging an EV

Public fast charging in Germany ranges roughly from 45 ct/kWh to over 90 ct/kWh. We explain what drives these differences and how to keep your charging bill in check.

Home vs. public charging

  • Home: 25–35 ct/kWh depending on your electricity tariff.
  • AC public: 40–60 ct/kWh – good for longer stops.
  • DC fast charging: 45–90 ct/kWh – fastest but priciest.
  • Ad-hoc without a card: often 20–30 % more expensive.

Charging cards and apps compared

A good charging card or app unlocks better prices across many operators. Popular options include:

  • EnBW mobility+
  • Shell Recharge / NewMotion
  • Tesla roaming (for non-Tesla too)
  • ChargingTimePay – our own card with transparent pricing
